About This Event
As daylight fades and the market quiets, step into an extraordinary evening of story, movement and reflection in the heart of Shambles Market.
Curated by the artist Mouse for York Festival Trust, these twilight performances offer more than theatre — they are a guided journey into the spiritual and emotional world of the plays, inspired by the power and immediacy of medieval storytelling.
Across the evening, five plays unfold in sequence, each one introduced by a Storyteller who invites you to look deeper — to experience the stories as they may once have been felt, and to discover your own response within them.
You won’t simply sit and watch. You’ll be gently guided through the market space as each play emerges in a new location, creating a continuous, immersive experience from beginning to end.
Music weaves throughout the evening — welcoming you in, connecting each performance, and lingering afterwards to allow time to pause, wander, and reflect.
The market itself is transformed. Striking woodcut-style artworks, inspired by the 2026 plays and created by artists including linocut specialist and Festival map designer Jo Rodwell, frame the space — drawing you closer into the stories and shaping a unique and atmospheric setting.
